Section 106 / Section4(f) / Environmental reviews Interpretation

Interpretation makes history relevant today. Museum exhibits, plaques, tours, and publications are among the ways to present information on broad historical patterns and specific sites and events. Each approach has advantages and limitations. The target audience and the interpretation’s goals influence the selection of format, narrative, and graphics.

Hess Roise develops creative approaches for interpretation, often integrating it into a site. Stairs can tell the story of an area’s geological layers; the tops of bollards along a sidewalk can be platforms for historical plaques. Our interpretation is often place-specific, highlighting special features―such as the spectacular vista of Saint Anthony Falls at Water Power Park in Minneapolis. We aim to make interpretation accessible on many levels, visually engaging, and fun.
